Description du contenu de l'enseignement

The course considers representations and perceptions of economic and socio-economic issues as they are construed in the Media. This includes looking critically into how news is produced, what newsworthiness means, what the role of ‘experts’ consists in, as well as more broadly looking into how non-news media, such as film, documentaries or TV series, diagnose socio-economic issue. The course also considers how the discourse of economics, in the name of science, relates to the political as such. It therefore centres on the political relation between Media and economics.
The main focus of the course is nonetheless the English language, and will thus concentrate on the critical analysis of language use, its rhetoric and the nuances and ideologies it may conveys. Analytical and critical readings, as well as discussions and listening comprehension will be used to assess the public construction and perception of ‘economic reality’.
